Where Chitosan Come From?

Natural chitosan is a sugar that is obtained from the hard outer skeleton of shellfish, including crab, lobster, and shrimp.

What Relation Between Chitosan and Chitin?

Chitosan is the product of acetylation of chitin. Generally speaking, more than 55% of N-acetyl group can be called chitosan. Or we can say deacetylated chitin is dissolved in one percent acetic acid or one percent hydrochloric acid, this deacetylated chitin is called chitosan. 

Chitosan is a linear polysaccharide composed of β-(1-4)-linked d-glucosamine (deacetylated unit) and N-acetyl-d-glucosamine (acetylated unit). It is useful in a number of commercial and biomedical applications.

●Control Cholesterol:

One of the biggest problems in human health is cholesterol, which causes many serious diseases.Chitosan has two mechanisms for lowering cholesterol.One is to prevent the absorption of fat, and the other is to excrete cholesterol from the human blood. First, chitosan inhibits the activity of lipases that aid in fat absorption.Lipase breaks down fat for the body to absorb.The other one is to excrete cholic acid.Once the cholic acid is excreted, cholesterol in the blood is used to make it.These two mechanisms make chitosan a strong cholesterol scavenger.Chitosan is a natural material with strong anion adsorption and is suitable for lowering cholesterol without any side effects.

Chitosan is easily soluble in weak acid solvents, especially that dissolved solution contains  (NH2+), which bind to negative electrons to inhibit bacteria.
